M-Pesa, Airtel and card

Shilling payments go through the Mamlaka payment gateway: a prompt on the payer's phone for M-Pesa or Airtel Money, Mamlaka's hosted page for cards, and B2C transfers for money out. The exchange's side of the merchant set-up is on AgriTrade as a Mamlaka merchant.

Being released

The money rails described here are built and tested, and are being rolled out. Until a rail is switched on for the exchange, invoices are paid by bank transfer or mobile money and recorded by Finance, as today.

Taking a payment

Finance or the trade desk starts a collection from Finance → Invoices (on an order invoice that is still owed) or when funding an escrow.

M-Pesa or Airtel

On Collect payment on INV-…, choose the rail:

  1. Enter the payer's phone and the amount (less than the outstanding for a part payment), then Prompt … for ….
  2. The payer gets a prompt on their phone from AgriTrade Exchange and enters their PIN.
  3. The exchange reads the result back from Mamlaka and records the payment on the invoice, or marks the escrow Funded.

Mobile money moves whole shillings: an amount with cents is refused.

Card

  1. Make a card page for … creates a link to Mamlaka's secure card page.
  2. Send it to the payer. They pay on Mamlaka's page, including any 3-D Secure step from their bank, and come back to the invoice.
  3. The exchange reads the result back from Mamlaka.

The card number never passes through the exchange. A card page that is not paid within a day expires.

Sending money (B2C)

Payouts to farmers, freight to transporters and advances to drivers can go to a phone by M-Pesa or Airtel. Each one:

  • is created Awaiting and needs two approvals from two different Finance users (see Approvals and transfers);
  • goes to the phone on the party's or driver's record, unless another is given;
  • is at least KES 10, in whole shillings;
  • is written as paid (the payout, the freight payment, the trip advance) only when Mamlaka confirms it.

Refunds

An escrow funded by M-Pesa or Airtel is refunded to the phone it was paid from, after two approvals. An escrow funded by card is refunded through Mamlaka; the exchange then records the refund. It does not send card refunds itself.
